Hayflick, whose doctoral dissertation had been on animal diseases caused by PPLOs, reasoned the Eaton agent might be a mycoplasma. Using a novel agar and fluid medium he devised, Hayflick isolated a unique mycoplasma from egg yolk containing the Eaton agent.
